Bio

I am Ryan Edelson, a law student at Duke University School of Law. I graduated with the highest distinction from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington with a double major in Finance, and Law, Ethics, and Decision Making (LEAD). After undergrad, I was a consultant for law firms and major international corporations at Harbor in Chicago for two years. The experience has solidified my passion for business, law, and the intersection of the two. I love to get my hands dirty in unfamiliar problems and find simple but effective solutions to complex questions. With that, I plan on becoming a corporate lawyer, where I have secured a summer associate position at a V10 law firm in New York. Personally, I love to read, watch movies or tv, and be active. I do weight lifting, yoga, running, hiking, and about anything you can name. My brother also has a Golden Doodle in Raleigh, and I spend Sunday playing with him and enjoying Mexican food. Tacos (and chocolate) put a smile on my face.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Write a Research or Personal Paper

Writing and Research can take many forms at different intensities. Don't feel pressured to have 100 sources and 100 pages. Instead, work within your schedule to dive into something you like. Some topics I find interesting are AI in law and / or business, the law and economics movement with a focus on transaction costs, the changing landscape of law firms, or how people develop a legal education. How do students at your school and in various grade levels learn about the law or business? Is it experience based, teacher / school provided in instruction, or typically through parents? Pick one and and analyze its effect, consistency, and deficiencies.

Draft a Policy Solution to a Problem or Potential Problem

While research is great, a solution to a problem is even better! Is there something you notice going wrong in school or misapplied in the world of business or law? Most legal issues have multiple sides. Maybe the new use of AI raises the need for new laws. Or maybe historical Supreme Court decisions require a revision in current law based on the effects. For example, what should the Supreme Court's ethical code be? How should it be enforced? We can work to find pragmatic or theoretical fixes to a potential or current issue.

Teaching experience

I have been teaching and mentoring students for eleven years, since being a chess tutor in the eighth grade. Throughout high school and college, I have been a student advisor alongside a guidance counselor, lab assistant for Honors Biology, Accounting 101 Peer Tutor, Freshman Mentor to business and finance students, Affinity Group Mentor for various backgrounds and ages, research assistant for a law professor, a student attorney for a pro bono legal clinic, and much more. Post undergrad, I helped train multiple interns and new hires in the fast-paced world of consulting. I continue to mentor at Duke. My motto is simple: I live to pay it forward. And I love to teach! Seeing other's succeed gives me fulfillment. The years of teaching taught me to meet students where they are at, but not pigeonhole them into what they already know. My job as a teacher and mentor is to help you reach your potential and hit your limits.
