Black holes and Hawking radiation

Project's result

I published my paper to the Research Archive for Rising Scholars (RARS) and created a short video on the same topic to submit to the Breakthrough Junior Challenge. I also hope to create a coding simulation extension and publish a revised paper to Intersect: The Stanford Journal of Science, Technology, and Society.

They started it from zero. Are you ready to level up with us?

Summary

Hawking radiation is a theoretical prediction proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1974, demonstrating that black holes can emit thermal radiation due to quantum effects near the event horizon. This discovery introduced the Black Hole Information Paradox, a fundamental challenge in theoretical physics that questions whether information is preserved during black hole evaporation, as required by quantum mechanics, or lost through the process of Hawking radiation. Resolving this paradox is essential for reconciling the principles of general relativity and quantum mechanics. This review examines the fundamental properties of black holes, the physics underlying Hawking radiation, the assumptions of semiclassical gravity, and major proposed solutions to the information paradox, including black hole complementarity, the AdS/CFT correspondence, and the Firewall Hypothesis. While no universally accepted resolution currently exists, recent developments in quantum gravity suggest that information may ultimately be preserved through mechanisms that remain an active area of research.

Project review

“There was a lot of helpful feedback throughout the project, which helped me strengthen my research and improve my writing. I learned a great deal about the research process and how to communicate complex ideas more clearly.”

About my mentor

“My mentor was incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and encouraging throughout the project. He provided really thoughtful feedback, answered my questions in depth, and helped me develop both my understanding of the topic and my research skills.”
