About

Hello! My name is Alfred Kwaku Debrah, and my project explores how non-nutritive sucking habits in children can influence the dental formula and potentially contribute to malocclusion later in life. Through this project, I developed a deeper interest in biological research and gained a greater appreciation for how early childhood habits can influence long-term health and development. Following the completion of this research, I hope to continue exploring my interest in biological research, expand my knowledge in the field, and potentially pursue opportunities to have this work published.

MALOCCLUSION AND NON-NUTRITIVE SUCKING HABITS (NNSH)

Started Dec. 12, 2024

Abstract or project description

Malocclusion, a misalignment of teeth when the mouth is closed, can result from both genetic and environmental influences. One modifiable environmental factor is non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSH), such as thumb and pacifier sucking, which are common in early childhood. This paper explores the relationship between prolonged NNSH and the development of malocclusion. It reviews the classification of malocclusion using Angle’s system and examines how extended NNSH alters oral and dental structures, potentially leading to conditions such as overbite and posterior crossbite. Emphasis is placed on early intervention strategies, including behavioral, aversive, and orthodontic approaches to reduce or eliminate these habits. Given the physical and psychological impacts of malocclusion, this paper highlights the importance of prevention through timely cessation of NNSH
